Fallacy literacy training 10/15

  1. The hasty generalisation

Also known as: insufficient statistics, argument by generalisation, faulty generalisation, hasty induction, over generality, overgeneralisation or unrepresentative sample (i.a.). The hasty generalisation is the reasoning error occurs when a conclusion is drawn from a small sample size, rather than looking at statistics that represent a much more typical or average [1][2].

Look at the figure and note how each data set shows different trends:

Figure extracted from: https://www.thoughtco.com/hasty-generalization-fallacy-1690919

In the context of climate change, trends in temperature, air quality and atmospheric phenomena can only be properly observed with a large set of data.
