Case study 1: Disinformation narratives and the 2024 European farmers’ protests 5/5

Impact on climate action and adaptation

The spread of disinformation during the protests had tangible effects. Public understanding of climate issues became clouded by falsehoods, undermining support for legitimate policies. More concerningly, some EU institutions and member states softened or delayed key environmental measures in response to the political pressure created by these narratives. This signals a troubling vulnerability: even well-founded climate action can be derailed by sustained misinformation campaigns.

Beyond policy shifts, these narratives contributed to a broader erosion of trust in institutions. By framing climate action as an elite imposition on ordinary citizens—especially farmers—disinformation efforts made it more difficult to build consensus on climate adaptation strategies. In agricultural regions already vulnerable to climate change, this loss of trust can delay urgent interventions and exacerbate existing inequalities.
