Recognising emotional manipulation and moral framing in disinformation 5/6
To resist these techniques, it helps to pause before reacting to emotionally charged content and ask:
Is this trying to inform me, or is it trying to upset me?
Being aware of manipulation tactics like exaggeration, false dilemmas, or name-calling is also useful. When correcting false claims, it is more effective to use calm and empathetic language and to frame your message in a way that respects the other person’s values. For example, when talking about climate change with someone who values national security, focusing on how climate action can strengthen a country’s safety and economy may be more persuasive than focusing only on environmental impacts.
