How can societies respond to the impacts of climate change? 2/4
Adaptation options
Different adaptation options or measures exist and can be broadly categorized as
- Institutional, such as policy instruments, laws and regulations (e.g. National Adaptation Plan) or land planning strategies,
- Economic and financial, such as funding or incentives instruments, but also taxes or insurance,
- Physical and technological, such as engineered options (e.g., sea walls, flood levees) or technological solutions (e.g., early warning systems, drought-resistant crops),
- Nature-based solutions, such as ecosystem restoration and urban green spaces,
- Knowledge and behavior, such as information, education and awareness raising, capacity building, and change in lifestyle practices.
