Impact of climate change on food security
The concept of food security, as defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), revolves around the availability, accessibility, and affordability of safe and nutritious food. Climate change threatens global food security by disrupting crop yields, water availability, and food safety. Extreme weather events, rising temperatures, and shifting rainfall patterns reduce agricultural productivity, increase food price volatility, and degrade nutritional quality. Southern Europe, for instance, faces prolonged droughts and heatwaves, which mainly affect staple crops, livestock, and aquaculture systems.
