How can societies respond to the impacts of climate change? 1/4
Climate change mitigation and adaptation
There are two main categories of action that societies can adopt to tackle climate change. On the one hand, mitigation aims at preventing or reducing the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere to make the impacts of climate change less severe. Mitigation is achieved either by reducing the sources of these gases, for example, by increasing the share of renewable energies or establishing a cleaner mobility system, or by enhancing the storage of these gases, such as reforestation. On the other hand, adaptation aims at anticipating the adverse effects of climate change and taking appropriate actions to prevent or minimize the damage it can cause.
