AI literacy: A new digital frontier 2/4

What is AI literacy?

AI literacy is the ability to understand, assess, and use artificial intelligence tools responsibly and effectively. As AI technologies become part of everyday life, AI literacy empowers individuals to engage not just as users, but as informed participants in shaping how these tools impact society.

It includes the ability to:

  • Recognise how algorithms influence what we see online, such as personalised content or ads
  • Understand the risks to data privacy and how AI-driven surveillance may affect personal freedoms
  • Spot biases in AI-generated content, whether in news feeds, recommendations, or automated decisions
  • Use generative AI tools ethically, whether for writing, research, or creative work

By developing AI literacy, individuals become more capable of making informed choices, questioning automated outputs, and using AI in ways that support fairness, transparency, and the public good.
