A popular meme in climate denial circles is “CO2 is plant food”, implying that increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is beneficial because it helps plants grow. While it is true that CO2 is a critical component of photosynthesis, this slogan ignores the broader context of climate change, including the negative impacts of rising CO2 levels, such as ocean acidification and extreme weather events. Another misleading slogan is “Climate has always changed”, which, while true, ignores the fact that the current rate of change is unprecedented in human history and is driven largely by human activities.
