Why media literacy matters 7/7

Misinformation and disinformation

These three terms are important:

Misinformation involves the unintentional dissemination of false or misleading information.

Disinformation refers to misleading information that is intentionally disseminated with the aim of manipulating public opinion or concealing the truth.

Propaganda consists of messages or multimedia content designed to influence public opinion by presenting only one part of the argument.

This is not new. Propaganda posters, partisan pamphlets, and politically controlled news have long existed. But today’s digital media often spread this content faster and further than ever before.

Media literacy helps us identify and resist these harmful influences wherever they appear.
